This page describes editing existing content.
Before editing, you should consider getting some editor training, or at least read the page describing the training and the page on creating page templates and content elements for new content.
Let's see how to edit this "How To Edit" page itself. Its navigation path is (see the location bar in your browser)
/resources/website/how_to_edit
The editable content is in the file
/resources/website/how_to_edit/content.html
You have two ways to find this content element.
Note: Pages > Manage Pages and Files means the Pages Module (first drop-down menu) and the Manage Pages and Files "Context" in that Module (second drop-down menu)
1) Login and navigate instructions.
Navigate in the File Manager (Manage Pages and Files) to the resources folder, then the website folder, then the how_to_edit folder, and then select the file content.html for editing.
Double-click the icon to open the content.html page Series Manager. Or single-click to select the page (it turns black) and click Manage Series.
Select the latest version (usually the one playing now on the web, indicated by the yellow dot between the past and future blue arrows) and click skyWrite to open the skyWriter window, or simply double-click the icon to skyWrite the page.
Please click Duplicate (formerly Clone) to archive the existing version. This allows you or your editor to rollback the page to a previous copy in the event your changes are not what were needed (versioning). You may be prompted to choose between editing a duplicate and editing the currently playing version.
Edit, Preview, when you like it, click Save to store your changes. When you are happy with the page, click Now to reschedule/publish it.
Next time you login, this page will be in the list of the pages with Recent Edits (in the Welcome Module).
Note that you can use your own favorite HTML editor. Just copy and paste the current code into your editor, make your changes on your own machine. When you are ready, click Upload in the skyWriter window, Browse to your new version, select it, then click Upload New File.
2) What You Click Is What You Get (In-Context Editing)
Simply navigate to the page on the website and control-click on the text you want to edit. You must be logged in, with a cookie set in your browser.
When you mouseover editable content, a yellow pencil
appears in the upper right corner and a page turning icon
appears in the lower left of the content block.
Click on these icons, or control-click (hold down the control key and click the mouse) in the content block to login and edit the content. Note that once you have edited a page, it will be remembered on your Welcome page for easy return access.
When you see there's a problem or something you need to change on a web page, simply control-click to go into the skyWriter directly to the content element you need to change. If you see the yellow pencil, you don't have to navigate the file structure to get to your work. (You must be logged in and will of course need the appropriate privileges to edit the content.)
Click Duplicate (formerly Clone) to archive the existing version. This allows you or your editor to rollback the page to a previous copy in the event your changes are not what were needed (versioning).
If you have a number of content elements you are responsible for, then when you login, the Welcome page will show a list of your Recent edits, with direct links to either the page series or the individual page.
This means you don't have to navigate down the site structure to find the work you need to do.
workFlow:
You may change the status of the page in the workFlow and add a comment for other editors describing what you did with the page, or what you expect them to do next, etc.
In the skyWriter window, click on workFlow, then click Post.
When the Post editor opens, it shows you the current status. Change it as desired and add a short comment in the textbox describing your changes. These comments are searchable.
You may manage who is Associated with your page by clicking on Users in the Series Manager.
Editorial privileges:
The CM Pros website now has named Section and Page editors. Edit privileges on a page are restricted to those members who are associated with the page and have a specific role (reporter, editor, publisher). Whenever a page which they are associated with is changed, they will get notification emails.
If you want to take responsibility for a page, join the website committee or ask CM Pros webmaster Bob Doyle about training and permissions. (bobdoyle@skybuilders.com)
