Silver Spring, MD, 28 September 2006--Content Management Professionals (CM Pros), the international content management community of practice, today announced its participation in World Usability Day (WUD). The 36-hour event takes place Tuesday, 14 November 2006, with events taking place around the globe. WUD promotes the values and benefits of usability engineering and user centered design, under the philosophy that everyone has the right to have things that work better.
CM Pros is partnering with the Society for Technical Communication to participate in a global online card-sort exercise. Card sorting is a quick, inexpensive, and reliable technique that allows information architects and usability professionals to create structures for print and online information, as well as suggestions for navigation and menus. The WUD card sort exercise will be carried out by participants on five continents, with a view to demonstrating regional differences in how people think about a single subject.
Rahel Anne Bailie, a member of both CM Pros and STC and driving force behind Intentional Design, chairs a committee of members from Canada, the US, Hong Kong, India, Poland, and the UK. "Working with such an international committee definitely enriches the organizing process, and will ultimately enrich the card sort exercise. With the input of the various members, we are thinking about issues that might have otherwise gone unnoticed."
An important aspect of the exercise is having a sound taxonomy to use for the card sort. "A well-built taxonomy helps visitors to find relations between content items that otherwise would not be possible - that is, not without a lot of manual (and in the long term, impossible) labor for editors. Of course, a taxonomy must be created with the mental model of visitors in mind, rather than the organization’s point of view. This is a very important rule in usability," says CM Pros' president, Erik Hartman. Hartman is President of the CM Pros Board of Directors and Director of Hartman Communicatie.

"Content management is no longer just a means to capture, manage and publish content, nor is it simply a piece of software," said Theresa Regli, Taxonomy and Content Management Expert at Molecular and longtime member of CM Pros. "Rather, content management has become the indispensable lifeblood of the customer experience - the means by which the right content is delivered to customers at the ideal moment of their interaction with a business." The Spring 2006 CM Pros Summit will kick off with a keynote session on Engaging Customers with Actionable Content by Bill Trippe, Senior Editor of The Gilbane Report, followed by two presentations: A User-Centered Approach to Content Management Design by Theresa Regli; Benefits of a User-Centered Approach to Information Architecture by Joan Lasselle and Mira Wooten of Lasselle-Ramsay. Rounding out the day are two breakout sessions: Microformats and the Future of Syndication from Nate Aune of AdaptiveWave and Portals: From Idea to Reality - the Dangers of the Current State of Portals in the Marketplace, facilitated by Tony Byrne of CMS Watch and Janus Boye of Boye IT. The day’s closing keynote features an address from James Robertson of Step Two Designs on Content Management in Call Centres: Delivering a Great Customer Experience. Day two of the event begins with two roundtable sessions: interactive development of the Content Lifecycle Poster facilitated by Erik Hartman of Hartman Communicatie BV and Scott Abel of The Content Wrangler. and Best Practices vs. Practicalities: Qualitative Decisions for Delivering the "Best" Content to Customers, facilitated by Rahel Anne Bailie of Intentional Design Inc. and Trevor Paterson of CHC Helicopters. Two parallel breakout sessions - The Importance of the Community in Open Source Content Management Systems by Renaud Richardet of Wyona Inc. and Achieving Structure in Enterprise Content from Peter Meyer of Elkera Pty Limited - will enable attendees the opportunity to examine in detail these important issues. Ann Rockley, past president of CM Pros and president of The Rockley Group, offers the event’s closing keynote: Developing a Customer-Centric Model for Content Management. "Organizations create huge amounts of customer facing content and they are putting a lot of time and effort into managing their customer relationships. Yet customers continue to have difficulty finding the right content at the right time in the right format - and the cost of customer support is soaring," said Ann Rockley. "Organizations have web and enterprise content management strategies, but no clear strategy to ensure that all their customer-facing content is effectively unified into a customer-centric content management strategy. My keynote will examine how a customer centric model for content management can support the customer experience at every touchpoint." Underscoring the many valuable benefits of CM Pros membership, CM Pros members will receive with each USD $145 Summit registration a USD $150 discount coupon for the Gilbane San Francisco event. The CM Pros committee process -- which enables members to formally organize in groups based on geographic location or common interest in a particular topic -- empowers any group of at least three members to form a committee by issuing a call for participation to the entire membership. A steering committee -- elected by community members at the group’s first meeting -- oversees the creation and progress of subcommittees and strives to advance the mission of the committee. CM Pros communities may host events and meetings as well as engage in working activities, such as by publishing newsletters or contributing white papers to CM Pro’s growing Knowledge Resource library.
The stated purpose of The CM Pros Africa Community is to provide African content management professionals with networking opportunities, a forum for exchanging and examining content management topics of interest, and for promoting and professionalizing content management in Africa. The CM Pros Africa Community will also serve as a central resource for local media comment on the content management industry and -- like the other CM Pros communities -- promote CM Pros mission and objectives within the African continent. The group will take a particular interest in Africa’s unique problem of internet access. Their first meeting is scheduled for February 16, 2006 via online conference.
"Increasing Africa’s knowledge of and participation in the online world is critical to bridging the continent’s digital divide," stated David Pearson, co-founder of The CM Pros Africa Community. "We’re committed to increasing the visibility of internet-based business paradigms in Africa."
Participation in CM Pros communities offers members the opportunity to build professional networks through face-to face-interaction, intensive collaboration, and unification in a common purpose: to support content management professionals as they strive for excellence in this increasingly important discipline.
“We are delighted to expand to another continent,” proclaimed Scott Abel, a newly-elected member of The CM Pro Board of Directors and keeper of TheContentWranger.com. "The establishment of the CM Pros Africa Community is an important next step in our mission to develop and support a truly global association of content management professionals."
Reinforcing the organization’s increasing relevance, CM Pros today also announced that its membership now exceeds 600 content management professionals. Prompted by the organization’s comprehensive array of member benefits, an average of more than 50 new content management professionals join CM Pros every month.

A steering committee -- elected by community members at the group’s first meeting -- oversees the creation and progress of subcommittees and strives to advance the mission of the committee. CM Pros communities may host events and meetings as well as engage in working activities, such as by publishing newsletters or contributing white papers to CM Pros growing Knowledge Resource library. Steering committees for The CM Pros Canada West Community and The CM Pros Australia Community have been formed. In Australia, co-chairs David Warwick and James Robertson are joined by Lauren Bryan and Matthew Harris. In Canada West, chair Rahel Anne Bailie is joined by Nenad Furtula, Fred Hoeflok and Jeff Sinclair. The stated purpose of The CM Pros Australia Community is to provide Australian content management professionals with networking opportunities, a forum for examining content management topics of interest, promotion of content management in Australia, educating on content management and developing mutual opportunities. The CM Pros Australia Community will also provide a central source for media comment on the content management industry and forward the CM Pros international mission statement and objectives within Australia. Their next meeting is scheduled for October 17, 2005 in Middle Park, Victoria. "Web content management remains a rapid growth segment in Australia and it is rare in its capacity to pull together professionals from a broad cross-section of the business community from content creators, publishers, marketers, company executives, designers, programmers, integrators and vendors," stated David Warwick, co-chair of The CM Pros Australia Community. "The CM Pros Australia Community offers significant networking and information sharing potential that does not exist in any other Australian professional forum. Without any promotion, our growth in a matter of weeks to 28 members highlights the pent-up demand in our corner of the world." The stated purpose of The CM Pros Canada West Community is to provide a local forum where professionals engaged in content management can learn and share information about content management to further the body of knowledge in this field. The group’s kick-off program meeting was held on October 3, 2005 in Vancouver, British Columbia, where the group convened around the theme "Putting the Content Back into Content Management." "Content management is the next big efficiency initiative since the Web," said Rahel Anne Bailie, chair of The CM Pros Canada West Community and president of Intentional Design (www.intentionaldesign.ca). "Content management is already making a big difference to companies who have implemented it -- implemented it properly, that is -- and will have a huge impact across all industry sectors and sizes. We can’t afford not to have a forum where professionals of all stripes -- practitioners, vendors, and the business sector -- can come together to discuss strategies and emerging best practices." The stated purpose of The CM Pros Benelux Community is to provide content management professionals with networking opportunities, a forum for exchanging and examining content management topics of interest, promoting and professionalizing content management in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, and educating on content management and developing mutual opportunities. The CM Pros Benelux Community will also provide a central source for media comment on the content management industry and forward the CM Pros international mission statement and objectives within Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Furthermore the group will assist new communities in other European geographies with their start-up activities, as well as engage in ongoing knowledge exchange and networking programs with them. The group’s first meeting was held October 5, 2005 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, at which time a steering committee was elected among candidates Daniëlle Kolmer, Maarten Korz, Adriaan M. Bloem and Erik M. Hartman — all of The Netherlands — and Peter Hinssen of Belgium. "This new community enables innovation and knowledge sharing within a regional group of individuals that share interests and experiences," declared Maarten Korz of De Lage Landen Financial Services (www.delagelanden.com) in The Netherlands. "The combination of an international organization and a high degree of topical and local activity gives CM Pros members the breadth and depth we need to be effective content management professionals within our region." Erik M. Hartman is one of the founders of CM Professionals and currently serves as Vice President of the Board of Directors. "It was a real honour to be the only European member who has been voted as a Board Member, and I always wanted a Benelux Community for content management professionals. As the international organization matures, it’s time to focus on local Benelux activities." Participation in CM Pros communities offers members the opportunity to build professional networks through face-to face-interaction and intensive collaboration. These first three CM Pros Communities united more than 100 members in a common purpose: to support content management professionals as they strive for excellence in this increasingly important discipline. "CM Pros Communities enable more frequent, directed and meaningful member interaction," affirmed Frank Gilbane, a member of the CM Pro Board of Directors and CEO of Bluebill Advisors (www.bluebilladvisors.com), and publisher of The Gilbane Report (www.gilbane.com). "Our unmatched knowledge exchange programs facilitate an overall increase in the degree of quality content management professionals can achieve for their customers and employers." Reinforcing the organization’s increasing relevance, CM Pros today also announced that its membership now exceeds 500 content management professionals. "We’ve experienced an exciting period of growth," said Laura Walker, executive director of CM Pros. "That growth is testament that our new Community program -- as well as the superlative industry expertise we’re delivering through our fall events -- offers tangible benefit to content management professionals." About CM Professionals Founded in 2004, CM Pros -- which has grown from a founding group of 30 content management experts to more than 500 members -- provides information, expertise and support to content management professionals and the organizations they serve. Through peer-to-peer interchange, the collaborative development of best practices, a series of educational events and definitive knowledge resources such as a content management glossary and resource library, the organization fosters a better public understanding of this critically important discipline. Join CM Pros on the Web at www.cmprosold.org.Silver Spring, MD, August 17, 2005—Content Management Professionals (CM Pros), the international content management community of practice, today announced its new member-driven committee process including a framework for the formation of regional chapters.
The CM Pros committee process—which enables members to formally organize in groups based on geographic location or common interest in a particular topic— empowers any group of at least three members to form a committee by issuing a call for participation to the entire membership. Within thirty days, the group hosts its first official meeting at which attendees elect a steering committee populated by at least three members of the group, one of whom serves as chair.
The steering committee oversees the creation and progress of subcommittees and strives to advance the mission of the committee. CM Pros committees may host events and meetings as well as engage in working activities, such as by publishing newsletters or contributing white papers to CM Pros growing Knowledge Resource library.
Named "The CM Pros [REGION] Community" or "The CM Pros [TOPIC] Community," the program is supported by CM Pros increasingly robust portfolio of services, including mailing lists, community-specific web pages, and support for events such as meetings and CM Pros Summits.
"CM Pros fosters knowledge exchange in the content management community," said Seth Gottlieb, Treasurer of CM Pros and Director of the Content Management Practice at Optaros. "By offering a practical approach to more frequent member interaction, the CM Pros committee process will help increase the organization’s day-to-day value."
"As an active member of the CM Pros community, I am thrilled that the organization has taken this step," said Rahel Bailie of Intentional Design in Vancouver, Canada. "This new committee process ensures that each and every member can receive direct benefit from their involvement."
Participation in CM Pros committees offers members the opportunity to build professional networks through face-to face-interaction and intensive collaboration. More than twelve regional groups plan to organize by the end of 2005, a number that is anticipated to double within a year.
"This new program enables innovation and knowledge sharing within small groups of individuals that share interests and experiences," declared Maarten Korz of De Lage Landen Financial Services in the Netherlands. "The combination of an international organization and a high degree of local and topical activity gives CM Pros members the breadth and depth we need to be effective content management professionals."

Silver Spring, MD, USA, 10 August 2005—Content Management Professionals (CM Pros), the international content management community of practice, today announced two new programs that enable broader participation in the association’s many activities.
Beginning with its fall 2005 event schedule—the first of which is the European Content Management Summit in Rotterdam, the Netherlands on October 5—CM Pros invites any individual or organization involved in content management to sponsor a CM Pros event. The $1000 sponsorship fee underwrites the cost of meeting space and refreshments and offsets the administrative costs associated with the events.
To ensure that each sponsor receives adequate promotional visibility, only up three sponsors will be accepted for each event. Available on a first-come, first-served basis, CM Pros Event sponsors will be listed in select event promotions identified for each event, such as messages to the CM Pros and other mailing lists, advertisements, the conference program, and signage at the event.
"Every CM Professional’s event offers an unparalleled opportunity for knowledge sharing," said Erik Hartman, Vice President of the CM Pro Board of Directors and President of Hartman Communicatie. "By offsetting event costs, our new sponsorship program will enable CM Pros to invest in broader promotion of the events, reaching people who may not yet know about us." In related news, CM Pros now accepts monetary donations from its members. Through its new CM Pros “Benefactors? program, the many members who cannot actively participate in the organization’s activities due to conflicting professional and personal commitments are now able to effectively contribute to the organization. CM Pros Benefactors receive recognition in the form of a personalized thank you letter from the Board of Directors and a listing on the CM Pros website. Available at three levels of contribution—Silver ($250), Gold ($500) and Platinum ($1000)—funding realized through the Benefactors program will be used for the organization’s discretionary program costs, such as hiring clerical assistance for CM Pros events.
"As one of the first members of CM Pros, I am committed to its success," said Lisa Welchman of Welchman Consulting. "I'm happy to have the opportunity to lend my support."
